Cleveland Cottage

This is a lovely traditional cosy cottage, comfortable, very clean and looked after. Pretty garden that gets the sun all day. Very peaceful, private and quiet except for the sound of birds- lots of swallows and swifts. Exmoor is a beautiful, unspoilt county, we did lots of walking by the sea and inland and found it to be mostly quiet and away from the crowds despite the hot weather and time of year. Dunster castle and village is a must visit and the Quantock hills are nearby. Shirley the housekeeper was a lovely lady, a real asset to the cottage, she went above and beyond to help. We extended our stay as it was so lovely. I imagine in the colder months it would be very cosy with the wood burner and the autumn colours in Exmoor would be wonderful. I did not find the downstairs bathroom a problem although initially was a bit concerned about this. Would recommend and felt this cottage was good value.

We enjoyed a peaceful four day break at Cleveland Cottage, a quaint old cottage with lovely views and easy accessibility to wonderful walks in beautiful natural surroundings.
The cottage is warm, well equipped and comfortable. Lots of information re. walks and the locality is available in the cottage.
Not suitable for people with mobility issues due to steps outside to access the property and narrow steep staircase.
The housekeeper who lives locally is very pleasant and it was nice to have that personal contact.

The property is incredibly beautiful, clean and in an ideal location for national trust visits. A little escape away but still close enough to shops and restaurants to feel secure.

A fantastic classic, traditional cottage, very comfortable, cosy and clean. Private and peaceful location, with parking (recommend reversing in as some others have commented). Warmly welcomed by housekeeper Shirley who was great.

However, what made this place so special was the housekeeper. From the moment she messaged, first thing on our day of arrival, till the day we left on a snowy, icy day, she was available via messages. She kindly provided recommendations of places to visit, eat and drink, when asked. Her visit to welcome us into the property and check we were happy with everything was lovely. She was so friendly and welcoming, we felt we had known her for ages.
The property was spotlessly clean on arrival and everything was available to explain the facilities, devices and gadgets. If you have any questions, about anything, a quick message or call to the housekeeper and you'll be sorted.

We highly recommend this cottage. You won't be disappointed.

We had a fabulous relaxing autumn break at Cleveland Cottage. A comfortable, well equipped accommodation in a beautiful and peaceful location. The cottage was very clean and well presented and Shirley the housekeeper was a great help in making sure we could make the most of our stay.

Cleveland cottage was just perfect - location, cleanliness, spacious rooms, great garden, good area for walks, the sea, stately homes.
I would definitely recommend following the owners directions for the final bit of the journey - MUCH better than Google maps!

Cleveland cottage is a beautiful and well laid out cottage, but you do need to be a bit fit. The steps up to the property and inside are a little steeper than average. Nothing you wouldn't expect from an old cottage like this one. Well equipped with all the cooking items you could need. The wood burner was very efficient and warmed us up in no time. Very peaceful place to stay and close to loads of amazing sites to see.

Cleveland Cottage is in a lovely location with pretty garden. The house is very well looked after by Shirley the housekeeper who is delightful. A nice kitchen and comfortable lounge, the beds were comfortable too. The downside being, no upstairs loo and the difficult staircase. We enjoyed our stay.

Lovely period cottage in an attractive peaceful hamlet.
We got use the narrow lanes which are characteristic of the area and enjoyed the experience of driving through a Ford at Bury.
The cottage was well equipped and very well looked after.
Whilst not an issue for us the steep stairs and downstairs bathrooms could be an issue for those of a reduced mobility.
There are a number of footpaths locally, a suntrap garden and a many of interesting places to visit.
It was a delight to meet Shirley, the housekeeper, who popped round to see us during the week.
We really enjoyed our stay there.

My only comment would be to bear in mind that if you have a large vehicle (we have a Nissan Elgrand) the parking is tricky you have to park across the parking space which is up quite a steep slope and all roads leading to the cottage are very narrow with very few passing places and as you would expect very hilly. But that said the cottage is beautiful and would recommend

Cleveland cottage is just wonderful. It's very tranquil and private with just birds and animals to be heard. The housekeeper called by to ensure we were OK and was really friendly. There is everything you need. Skilgate is more like a hamlet with a few cottages and a church. We absolutely loved it and didn't want to leave!

Excellent rural location. Extremely well equipped, furnished and spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We would happily have extended our stay - or not left at all!

The cottage was exactly as described, warm and spotlessly clean. The kitchen was really well appointed and the cottage had everything we needed for our week's stay. The really friendly housekeeper, Shirley, popped in to make sure all was well, which we thought was a really nice touch, thank you.

Cleveland Cottage was truly lovely. It is in a beautiful area of countryside, close enough to local villages for going out to dinner yet perfectly private. It is cosy inside, though has plenty of space. The master bed is huge, the kitchen is well stocked for cooking and baking, and the cottage was well heated - even in January. Before our stay, the housekeeper contacted us to let us know the cottage was ready, and even checked in on us during our stay, which was a really nice touch. The fire was well-stocked and kept the living room nice and toasty in the evenings. I really recommend a stay.

A superb and very comfortable cottage. Well maintained and very clean. Everything you could possibly need for a totally relaxed holiday.

Very comfortable and spacious cottage. Have visited before and would use again .
TV reception was a bit varied but excellent smart TV and good broadband made up for this .
Property has a decent bathroom with bath but hot water supply could be improved, but property has an excellent separate shower room with WC etc so not a significant issue .
Good wood burner kept the cottage warm and comfortable but night storage heaters also provided adequate heating.

We were very pleased with Cleveland cottage. It was very clean and tidy. The kitchen was very well equipped and the beds were very comfortable too. We enjoyed sitting in the garden with only the birds for company.
The low doorways caught us out a few times as we are both very tall and had to learn to stoop moving around downstairs.
Very well situated to explore Exmoor. We were very grateful to the owners for allowing us to store our bikes safely in the garage.

Cleveland Cottage was everything we hoped and wanted it to be. A traditional cottage in the heart of the countryside, listening to birdsong every morning as we woke - what’s not to like?! A great location for exploring Exmoor and the perfect escape from our everyday, busy lives. The main thing I would mention is that the bathrooms are downstairs, so for anyone that needs to get up in the night, be mindful of this, as the stairs are quite steep. It’s also important to reverse onto the parking space! We would highly recommend this cute cottage, we had such a lovely time there.

The cottage was amazing from the outside in. Very clean and cosy. Had everything we needed. On arrival there was milk in the fridge and a complimentary tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits package. The kitchen draws were full of every day essentials, including little things like foil, food bags, batteries, light bulbs etc. There were folders full of information on how to use all the equipment including the log fire, and things to do in the area which was very useful. There is a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge and separate freezer as well as a microwave. The rooms are warm and cosy and very homely. There is shower room and separate room with a wonderful freestanding bath, both rooms includes a toilet. Bed linen and towels are provided as well as logs for the fire. We could not fault this cottage, it felt like home and we didn't want to leave. We love the countryside and this cottage embodied everything about how country life should be. We will definitely be booking to stay here again and again. Loved it. Compliments to the housekeeper Shirley who was a lovely lady, who keeps the upkeep of the cottage pristine, and made sure everything was ok with us and if we needed anything. Fantastic cottage, value for money, highly recommend.

Not suitable for small children and elderly families.

Pretty cottage... slightly isolated location but that was what we were looking for. Perfect for exploring Exmoor. Everything we needed was there.

Cleveland cottage is perfect for a break away from it all. The cottage is warm and cosy and the garden very pretty.
We visited Dunster and Minehead and enjoyed a meal at The Anchor Inn. There are shops at Dulverton and Bampton. Exmoor is unspoilt and quiet. I would definitely return.

A lovely old cottage but so much better when the weather is good. Driving on the narrow roads with potholes was difficult but the small villages were lovely to wander round. There were some interesting shops to see and cafes to have a coffee and cake. We enjoyed returning to Minehead and travelling on the steam train. We had a few meals out at The Anchor Inn which was easier to get to than Dulverton. An interesting area and if the weather is bad it's not far to Tiverton, or to Exeter where we had a lovely time in IKEA!

Cleveland Cottage was a good base for our visit to West Somerset. Cottage was clean and well equipped. The local village is tiny — just a church and approximately 100 people — but it was a good jumping off point to hike in Exmoor and explore some of the local villages. Would recommend!

A very comfortable cottage in a very peaceful area.

Lovely cottage, secluded, private & pretty garden. very clean, new bath & shower rooms. Must be older than it looks in photos judging by very thick walls but in mid May it was very cosy, I had to turn the storage heaters off and the log burner was definitely not required. I would bring a detailed map next time as Google Maps was defeated by the tiny one-car lanes in some areas & signal could be patchy. Beautiful countryside and villages. Doorway to utility & shower room is the only very low one, remember to duck. I would definitely go back.

A lovely, comfortable, traditional country cottage in a beautiful location. The rooks cawing, the sheep and the birdsong are all you will hear and if you are into stargazing you will have fantastic dark skies! There are steep steps both within and to access the cottage, so you do need to be mobile. The location is great for walking on Exmoor (straight out of the front door) and accessing all the watersports activities on Wimbleball Lake (our boys had great fun learning to windsurf!). It's a bit of a drive to any food shops - worth booking a supermarket delivery if you can. If driving you do need to be confident about narrow lanes, steep hills and negotiating passing places - that just goes with the countryside location. Worth it to get to the lake though and to the Bridge Inn at Dulverton - would recommend the latter but if you want to eat, do book.

A very lovely property. Very quiet and with good far reaching views. Loads of places nearby to visit but ideally a Spring / Summer / early Autumn location to stay at when you could take full advantage of the garden and it's situation. If you don't like driving along narrow lanes possibly not one for you but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay despite the torrential rain over most of Christmas.

Lovely cozy cottage and a great place for a peaceful stay. Great location for visiting areas in Somerset and Devon. Access is tricky and with that and the stairs in the property it is not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues.

Very relaxing place to come back to at the end of the day exploring the beautiful local scenery. It was very clean and the kitchen well equipped. Wonderful views and an ideal patio area to enjoy the sunshine.

We are two school friends meet up to walk and talk ( laugh). Cleveland Cottage suited our needs and was in a good position to explore Exmoor and the North Somerset coastline. Highly recommendable

lovely friendly cottage. very well appointed with excellent wifi and media choice on the TV. nice size garden to sit for coffee. the roll top bath and the separate shower room were welcome at the end of a long day touring around the lovely but challenging country roads.

The village of Skilgate is about 5 miles from Bampton and a little further to Dulverton, which both have a good selection of pubs and shops, and both delightful in different ways. If exploring this Somerset/Decon border country, be prepared for a lot of very narrow lanes and make sure you have satnav (although ignore TomTom’s instructions to Tarr Steps, it took us to the wrong side of the Steps so we either turned back through a roller coaster of narrow lanes or risked the 8” deep crossing, over stones. We gambled and succeeded, and became a visitor attraction in the process.

In short, a lovely place if you want to get away from it all, Haddon Hill is just up the road, lovely views to Wimbleball Reservoir and Exmoor.

Lovely cottage full of character in a peaceful location. Ideal for exploring Exmoor attractions - we particularly enjoyed exploring the National Trust's Holnicote Estate and the famous Tarr Steps. Dulverton well worth visiting, lots of interesting shops (a wonderful fruit and veg shop) , Heritage Centre and National Park Information.

The cottage was beautiful in every respect.
We recieved a curtesy call from the housekeeper, Shirley, before arrival, she was so welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble for her to make our holiday special. The cottage location was rural, in beautiful countryside on the edge of the village.

A wonderful place to have a holiday, a lovely cottage in a quiet, rural situation.
Re walks: there is an excellent walk:- from Skilgate continue round Wimeball Lake/reservoir & also visit the derelict church of St John.

Cleveland Cottage was a great little place to stay for our family of four. The kids loved running around in the garden, which was very safe and we all loved sitting cosied up by the fire and watching telly together in the evenings. There was lots to see nearby and plenty for the kids to do, even in the winter. We visited the stunning Knightshayes National Trust property that was surrounded by woodlands for the kids to run around in, then took the wooded path from the clapper bridge at Tarr Steps all the way back around to the Tarr Hotel where we had cream teas overlooking rolling hills full of autumn colours. We even managed to squeeze in a visit to Minehead on our last day and had a bracing run around on the wide open beach. My only regret is that we didn't see Dunster Castle, which looked very beautiful from a distance.

Cleveland Cottage is in a lovely location with very attractive views from the garden. Although it is not really remote there are a confusing number of lanes leading to Skilgate. It is essential, therefore,to follow the directions given. These are perfect and Post Lane becomes the route of choice from the village.
We were very impressed by the cleanliness of the cottage. Shirley,the housekeeper (who is a delight by the way) had been meticulous in ensuring that everything was absolutely spotless.

Although we were well aware from the description of the cottage that there are steps up from the lane we felt that a clearer indication should begin that some people would find these very difficult, if not impossible, to manage,particularly when wet and slippery. Likewise the staircase down from the bedrooms is not easy to manage especially at night if visiting the toilet is necessary.

It should also be noted that there is very poor mobile phone coverage - just about possible at the far end of the garden but not in the cottage. The description indicated that there was a landline phone available. There wasn't. A note in the cottage guide book referred to using "wi-fi calling". This is misleading. "Wi-fi calling" is only possible with certain of the latest mobile phones and not with all providers/phone contracts. The landline handset needs to be replaced. Without it an emergency could become a tragedy.

It was unfortunate that the flush mechanism in the bathroom toilet tank was broken. It worked for our first three days and then failed completely making this toilet unusable. Shirley and her husband endeavoured to get it repaired but could not obtain parts. This meant that only the shower room toilet was available.

This was inconvenient and unsatisfactory especially at night.

Overall,however, we enjoyed our stay and in spite of the 1970s style heating/hot water system the cottage was warm and comfortable.

On arrival the cottage was clean and tidy. The garden was well maintained. The kitchen was well equipped and the lounge and bedroom spacious and comfortable. Although the accommodation was for four people, it was refreshing to discover that because we were only two there was a reduction in the cost.

Ideal for a quiet and relaxing stay. Only a minor point but the cottage is sited down some narrow lanes and we didn't find too many open spaces for children to play apart from the garden."

Absolutely wonderful holiday spent in this gorgeous cottage so peaceful log burner and roll top bath make it very romantic lots of quirky bits like original stairs hidden in the wall and low beams watch your head ! I found the cottage very warm, cosy and comfortable with a lovely fire-place. All the furnishings are practical and in excellent condition.

Our stay at Cleveland Cottage over new year was absolutely lovely. The cottage was exceptionally clean and felt luxurious and cosy. We enjoyed some fabulous daytrips to nearby National Trust places and the seaside and we also loved Wimbleball Lake. Would definitely recommend. And thanks for a lovely welcome!

Wonderful week in the most comfy and clean cottage with home from home facilities

Lovely home from home cottage, very clean and we loved sitting in the pretty garden. If you want peace & quiet on your holiday this is the place to go. Dulverton which is a 4.5 miles drive is a lovely village to visit and has a couple of nice pubs for lunch and also some quaint little shops. Clare - Bristol.

An immaculately presented, characterful home in a perfect location with a stunning garden area. Very well equipped, warm, private & tranquil. Not sure about previous comments regarding difficulty navigating narrow lanes & lack of proximity to food supplies- this is rural Britain so what can you expect?! It’s not in the wilderness! We really appreciated the extremely comfortable large bed as well as being unsuitable for dogs. We have stayed in so many cottages that are dog- friendly and, quite frankly, there are some of us out there who don’t want doggy smells! Cleveland Cottage was perfect for us in many ways and we would certainly consider booking again with other family members. Thank you for a superb short winter break & for four days of cold but wall to wall blue skies- perfect walking weather!

We loved our week at Cleveland Cottage. It was very peaceful, the countryside around was beautiful. We would go back.

It is in a small village. The approach is down the usual narrow country lanes you would expect in this part of the country, but there were enough passing places. The cottage has a lot of character, the doorways are quite low (which you might want to know if you are a tall person). I was relieved that there were no noisy or aggressive dogs nearby. There were lovely views from the cottage.

This was a fantastic cottage for our family when my partner was completing the iron man in Exmoor. It's lovely and cosy, in a beautiful location and feels really homely.

Would recommend this cottage, beautiful setting and plenty to do if you like walking and relaxing. Lots of NT places nearby and not far from the coast. Great holiday helped out by the weather

Cleveland Cottage was amazing, so clean and well looked after. We found the owners had been very thoughtful in the way they had equipped the cottage and we had everything we needed. A beautiful countryside location with lots of opportunities for walking and enjoying the outdoors. Will consider visiting again.

Would definitely recommend if you want a quite place to stay, with lots of walks around the area.

This is a spacious, carefully thought about cottage with bright rooms, quality decor and furnishings and extremely comfortable. Full of character whilst offering all mod cons. The garden and outlook are very special and although there are many roads in and out of Skilgate, you get the hang of it in the end and the hedgerows in May/June are wonderful.

Had a wonderful very relaxing holiday in this beautiful cottage, had everything you would ever need in the way of equipment. And although the roads around the area are very narrow and winding there are some wonderful views and within short distance of some lovely places to visit. Our favourite place being Watersmeet at Lynmouth.

The garden was superb on warm sunny days. Totally private with a beautiful outlook. And silence except for the birds! Even our own visiting bunny rabbit.) We would highly recomment this cottage. It is so oldie world, yet all the 'mod cons' to make it so comforable and relaxing. The area is one our most favourite for walks and scenery.

A lovely clean comfortable cottage. The beds are super comfy and the fire is a real treat. We had a very peaceful, restful Christmas break especially as Tesco delivered our Christmas shopping! Just be prepared, roads and stairs are steep and winding. Lots of basics already at the cottage such as toilet paper, washing up liquid, salt and pepper and we were left a lovely welcome pack including mince pies, chocolate coins and a cheerful poinsettia. Cleveland cottage is lovely. It is spacious, very well equipped and furnished. It was warm with plenty of hot water and lovely bathrooms. The beds were comfortable with superior bedding. The kitchen provided everything required with nice utensils and crockery. There was a welcome basket with tea, coffee, sugar and biscuits. Note: take milk for first day as nearest shop isn't close! The cottage was immaculate with lots of nice touches i.e. hand soap, thick towels. The furniture is nice with large flat screen TV with Freeview, cd and DVD players. The best cottage we've stayed in. The cottage is very remote and accessed by very narrow, windy roads. Dulverton, a lovely village with all amenities, is 6 miles away.

It was really good. There was fresh flowers on the table, roses! We enjoyed it very much!
