NEW FOR 2024

Originally a residence for the level crossing gatekeeper on the Isle of Man Steam Railway in Port st Mary, Gatekeeper's Cottage has been lovingly refurbished to a high standard.

Located right beside Port St Mary railway station this property is perfect for those interested in enjoying a unique heritage railway experience on the doorstep! The Isle of Man Steam Railway opened in 1873, with the route to Port Erin from Douglas completed in 1874. Today, the railway still uses its original locomotives and rolling stock and operates from March - October each year passing directly outside the cottage. From here you can enjoy a journey to Castletown or Douglas, or just a short hop to Port Erin where the line terminates.

Port St Mary itself is a great base for holiday with a good range of places to eat and drink less than 5 minutes walk from the cottage, shops and a regular bus service connecting the airport and Douglas, with 3 services an hour during peak times. Port Erin with its wide bay and sandy beach is just a couple of minutes drive away too.

The cottage features two spacious bedrooms, one of which is en-suite and is pet friendly with an enclosed patio. An outdoor shed is also available for guest use should extra storage be required.

Mr Jeater

The accommodation was fine. We would have liked instruction manuals for the cooker, microwave and tv. Thank you Sam for coming over to help. Great place for train enthusiasts. Would recommend the Port St Mary's boat trip around The Calf of Man. A radio would be a good addition if FreeView remains unavailable - we could only access Iplayer. Would stay again, especially if manuals are available as we are not from the digital savvy generation.

Mrs Jenkins

If you like trains this location is perfect. The cottage was well presented, clean and comfortable. It was a good base for exploring the IOM. We used the train a lot, as well as the other heritage transport options and the bus. All with the Explorer card, definitely worth purchasing if your interested in that stuff, we are. A couple of basic things would have been helpful or useful for the holiday which have been suggested to the owner. It is very close to the road but it is only busy in the day and does not affect the bedrooms, but it is something to be aware of.

Mr Whitehead

Well worth a stay! We realy enjoyed our stay. The budding is so light it contains all the items you would require to eat in or out during a stay. There is a down side. This building is definatley not suitable for people with walking frames or walking sticks. The ramp at the front is to steep and the three steps inside are to steep and to narrow The facilities would not pass the occupational health regulations. its a pity because it is a lovely venue to stay what with 8 steam hauled trains a day passing. Also outside the door there is a stepdown onto the patio, if not careful you could, when backing off, trip on the step, perhaps some form of colouring or black and yellow tape around the edge. Finally the borders could do with trimming back, the nettles and briairs are far to long and blow around in the wind catching people. Having said all that we would highly recommend this facility to everyone other than those with disability mentioned.
