Reviews

Just a two minute walk from the tiny harbour, children's play park and popular pub in the quiet waterside village of Golant, this delightful chalet bungalow is unexpectedly spacious inside. The Sheiling is a real home-from-home, inviting you to relax and unwind from the minute you step inside with books, games and maps showing footpaths and places to explore.

The paved garden is enclosed with a pond in the front and tiny stream at the rear. A sheltered bench has views of the water, with boats on their moorings in summer and wildfowl feeding on the low tide mudflats in winter. This is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (now known as National Landscapes) with footpaths meandering along riverbanks and picturesque Fowey and Polruan, linked by car and pedestrian ferries, a couple of miles away.

Mrs Harrison

This cottage is like a home from home. Full of vintage, personal objects - which we loved, but may not be to everyone's taste. The view is gorgeous and Golant is a very pretty village on the Fowey River with a great pub right on the seafront. The cottage is very spacious and had everything we needed for an extended family visit with 3 adults, 2 young kids and a dog. The garden is very pretty with lots of places to sit - just a pity we didn't have the weather to sit out. Great value a 5 night stay at Easter too. We would love to visit again.

Mrs Robyns-Landricombe

Great base for a relaxing holiday. Plenty of space & well equipped. Lovely village, stunning setting, friendly locals & the pub “Fisherman’s Arms” is a must for anyone staying there. We’ll definitely be returning to Golant.

Mrs Buckingham

This property is in a peaceful and picturesque location although the single track road to it can be difficult at times especially as there was some construction going on in the village and lorries caused some difficulties. The property itself is quirky, which would be fine if it didn’t feel so tired and grubby. It was like stepping back in time as the property still retained its original 1960’s feel. The beds were comfortable and the bedding and towels were clean, but the floors could have done with a wash, the armchairs were extremely saggy and there were stains on the seats. The photos of the property did not reflect the actual atmosphere of the house.

Miss Kruse

Wonderful cottage and perfect base for a holiday in Cornwall. Cottage had everything you could need with plenty of living space and car parking which is always a bonus. Lovely walks to be found around the village and the food at the Fisherman’s Arms is definitely recommended. We had a perfect holiday in a comfortable and cosy cottage in a tranquil setting.

Mr kimber

Fantastic little cottage in a great location, very quaint with great character, having a washing machine and dryer was an added bonus. Local pub which serves great food less than 2 minutes walk. Once you are out on the main roads getting anywhere within Cornwall is easy. Would definitely recommend and would return if visiting Cornwall again

Mrs Day

Pleasant property, well equipped.

Mrs Drudge-Coates

Nice cottage but spoilt by needing a THOROUGH clean. Dust, cobwebs and even rubbish under beds.

Mr Cochrane

The website and photos are a true and accurate depiction of the facilities and location. The warnings about access via single track roads with paasing places are appropriate. Parking would be for two family cars max , one blocking the other in . Is the garage part of the sheiling or is it linked to the next door reading room

Mr Knights

A really lovely cottage. Well equipped, comfortable and clean in a superb location. We will be back.

Mrs Hobbs

I would certainly recommend this property and would also come back again. The caretaker of the property was very prompt in coming round to sort out a niggle we had when we first arrived with the new hob in the kitchen, he was very polite and very helpful.

Mr McCormick

A quirky house combining lots of character with modern necessities. Well suited for our family of five, with plenty of separate spaces for adults and teenagers to claim as their own. Lots of space to sit and eat outside, with a bubbling stream in the garden. If you decide to visit, make sure you're comfortable driving on single-track roads, as the only access to this quiet village is via one.

Mr Rihs

It was so nice to walk down to the river (30 seconds away) and enjoy the lovely view there, the kids' playground and the pub. A place we'll remember.

Mr Brazier

A lovely cottage that we would visit again The decor is dated but suited us. The bedroom layout was perfect for two couples. The upstairs en-suite was tight ( narrow shower and sloping roof. ) Located near to the tidal river. No local shop. this is Cornwall and to drive anywhere is slow and tricky!! Good value. We were two retired couples and was perfect for us, just make sure you take enough food with you.

Miss McLoughlin

Perfect holiday home for us. We had a family of 3 and a couple staying together, more than enough space. Great views and a lovely relaxing garden. Would definitely come back again.

Mr Fowler

A wonderful location given the way just a few minutes walk from the harbour and the Fishermans Arms which we made good use of. The cottage offered everything we needed and more I can only say that the garden was just a delight

Mrs Knights

Golant is a delightful, quiet village but be prepared for a long, narrow, bumpy & steep drive down into it! The access to the Sheiling is quite awkward and will only comfortably take 2 normal sized vehicles. The bungalow itself is spacious - apart from the small kitchen and quite comfortable. The garden is 'jungle like' attractive with plenty of seating. The house information folder is basic unlike other Classic Cottage properties visited over the years.

Mrs Runnalls

Lovely cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There are lots of places to visit in the surrounding area. Also some great places to eat eg. Sam’s (Fowey), Captain Hank’s Crab Shack (Fowey), and the New Inn pub (Tywardreath) serve a fantastic Sunday lunch. There are fishing trips from Looe and Mevagissey but these are best booked in advance. There are also speed boat trips (Sea Safari) from Looe which take you around Looe Island where there are seals and along the coast to Polkerris. On the doorstep in Golant is a water sports centre where you can learn to paddle board, kayak or canoe. You can also buy yummy Cornish pasties here and Jules makes a great coffee. There are tables outside where you can sit with your refreshments and look at the river.

Mrs Bastick

Lovely, comfortable holiday home with everything we needed. Great location and also quiet and peaceful

Mr Deacon

Property needs some updating

Mr Alcock

Fab getaway with peaceful, tropical garden. No shops in Golant but large supermarket chains do delivery. Fisherman's Arms does a wide range of food including takeaway pizza (with notice) The Sheiling is well equipped but furnishings and paintwork are tired. Beds comfy but sofas not. Good, reliable internet access.

Mrs Short

If you want to get away from it all, Golant is a delightful little village with one pub which serves excellent food. It is essential to have a car as there are no shops locally. The cottage is best described as compact and quirky as many of the owners' original ornaments (and furniture) fill the rooms - so possibly not to everyone's taste although the record players and LPs will appeal to the nostalgic! Some furniture is looking a little shabby (rugs in particular) but everything was clean and tidy and kitchen and bathrooms had been modernised. The garden however, was a delight. Lush and heavily planted with a little stream running through it, it was a real sun trap with views of the river. The drive was just big enough for 3 cars to park on, which was also a bonus as the streets are too narrow for parking.

Mrs Blandford

Golant is a peaceful and pretty destination and the surrounding area has a lot to commend it. The Sheiling, however, is tired and in need of much TLC. To start with the positives, it has a garden which is a delight, a very comfortable bed which afforded a good nights' sleep and a shower which was both hot and powerful. However, the presentation of the property we found to be sad and depressing. There were stains on walls, peeling paint and soft furnishings which were threadbare and had seen better days. We also discovered cleaning issues and safety issues with the electrics. We contacted Classic who were prompt in coming out to see us. They were thorough and professional in listening to our concerns and promised some changes going forward. We were also reassured that the electric issues would be rectified. This could be such a lovely holiday home but in it's present condition, it wasn't for us.

Mrs Athey

What a gem of a cottage! It is very well equipped with really comfortable beds and lovely outside area. The village is very friendly and having a pub within walking distance was an added bonus. We even had entertainment from a local folk group who met to sing together on the Sunday evening.

Mrs Day

Well located, well equipped cottage with lovely stream running through the bottom of the garden.

Mrs Green

Remember to take own seasoning etc and very careful on the driving best to drive in and go to bottom and turn round

Mrs Prior

The Shieling is bright, with a lovely garden and in a beautiful, peaceful location in Golant. We spent many happy days on Lantic Beach and Polridmouth Cove and there are nice local walks as well as the coast path not too far away. There was a lovely welcome basket and the property was spotlessly clean and we found the beds all very comfortable. The house could do with some updating with some of the rooms looking tired and dated. It also missed some of the touches we’d enjoyed and come to expect in Classic Cottages properties - a good welcome pack of recommended places to visit, DVDs or on demand TV / games etc.

Mrs Thompson

Well equipped property in a lovely village. Pub was great. There is also a lovely cafe at the water sports centre. The weather was fantastic too! The property could do with some general updating though.

Mrs Holley

Lovely spot

Mrs Limongi

This is a very comfortable house, with a peaceful garden. It is very well equiped. We had a relaxing time. we especially appreciated the beautiful environment, after being in lockdown for so long.

Mrs Jones

This is a truly lovely cottage which is much more spacious than the pictures suggest. The garden surrounding the house with lots of different seating areas is really nice and means you can catch the sun anywhere! The cottage is very well equipped and feels very homely and it was also extremely clean on arrival. The COVID preparations and instructions were good. Fantastic too to be able to walk down to the river and the wonderful pub where we were made very welcome and had really delicious pub grub (salmon fishcakes to die for!). There are so many places to visit in the area, including The Lost Gardens of Helegan, Lanhydrock House and gardens, The Eden project and lots of lovely coastal villages. We went on walks from the house and particularly memorable Is the Hall walk from Fowey taking in Bodinnick and Polruan and taking the ferries. As another reviewer suggested, when leaving the property to go out, reverse out of the drive uphill and go down to the bottom to turn round! It is a narrow lane with passing places! We would highly recommend The Sheiling for a relaxing break.

Mr Grey

What a beautiful holiday home. Very tranquil and relaxing. There are lots of personal touches throughout The Sheilings.

Ms Beaumont

Beautiful garden and garden room. Fabulous location, quiet with stunning views from the house. Lovely place to unwind.

Mr Simons

Excellent property, ideal for a family holiday.

Dr Mohan

The Sheiling is a charming, Quirky cottage. It has everything you need and more. If you like it from the pictures you'll love it there. It's perfect. One tip - don't reverse into the driveway. Pull in, reverse out up the hill and go down to the river and turn around.

Ms Redpath

Beautiful spot, lovely walks also hand being close to the fisherman's arms for food in the evenings.

Mrs Evans

The cottage was lovely very comfortable. It had everything you could need. Would stay again.

Mrs Smith

In a very good location, close to Fowey and many walks close by. A good place for two couples sharing or if teenagers need space of their own.

Mr Kerby

Great location but that's all

Mrs Dunbar

Such a lovely feel when you walk in. So homely, such a lovely stay.

Mr Gould

What can I say, the Sheiling has everything. From a good assortment of quality pots and pans, all with correct lids. Everything a kitchen needs, lovely comfortable bed, (haven't slept so well in ages!) very comfortable furnishings, and that incredible conservatory where we spent a great deal of time. The garden is wonderful with a great many birds and a frog, certainly the garden's natural stream is a real asset, and provides a home to whirligig beetles. Bats fly around in the evening, even a stag beetle came to see me. Cynthia, the housekeeper, was very kind and relaxed and made us feel very welcome. In short, if you want peace and quiet far from the madding crowds, the Sheiling is for you.

Mr Jones

Fantastic location, easy reach of lots of places. Home from home

Ms Fogg

The cottage is in a quiet and peaceful location, with some good views of the River Fowey, and perfectly situated to visit places such as the Eden Project, Fowey and beaches at Polkerris and Par.

Mr Fullerton

A lovely cottage in a quiet village with a friendly pub close to hand.

Ms Watson

This was the second year that we have stayed at the Shieling. We loved it just as much this year and will definitely return again. Lovely property in an idyllic location peace perfect peace.

Mr Irving

for the first time on using holiday rental properties we found the beds very comfortable and had, much needed, good restful nights.

Mrs Beddard

Very nice property, very comfortable. No hesitation in recommending to others.

Miss Angus

This was a last minute booking and we weren't sure what to expect, but on the basis of the excellent help we got when booking we were optimistic. We weren't disappointed, great service, great house and a great location for well needed R&R

Mr Baker

Its not as good as it looks in the publicity.

Mrs Preece

This house was absolutely perfect - we were a party of 2 couples and we could have our own space or be together quite easily..The location is lovely and relaxing, but equally there is plenty nearby to do. The pub in the village provides good food at reasonable prices for those days when you don't want to cook. An oasis of calm to which we hope to return very soon.

Ms Watson

Great place to stay if you appreciate peace and tranquility. The cottage is a real gem, well equipped, comfortably furnished with a lovely garden where you can find many different spots to sit and relax, weather permitting.

Mrs Hawley

This is a lovely bungalow in a beautiful, friendly village. The local pub ' The Fishermans Arms ' serves excellent food if you don't feel like cooking. You are only a short walk from the river and it is an easy walk as well, not too steep if you are older or pushing a pushchair. There is everything you could need in the cottage, and if it is rainy there are books , records, games and videos etc in abundance. If there is anything you need to know the extremely helpful housekeeper, Cynthia, is close at hand. Everywhere was clean and tidy when we arrived, and I hope it was not too bad when we left !!

Mrs Pearson

As a family of 4 adults, one child, a baby and a dog, there was plenty of space at the Sheiling for a comfortable stay. Seemingly everything was provided including bed linen and towels and a huge range of kitchen items. The little touches were appreciated as well, such as the fresh flowers, milk and chocolates on arrival. Our granddaughter loved the little play area by the water. We also used the village pub on a few nights - the food was reasonably priced and of good quality.

Mr Craig

A snug and serene cottage in picturesque Golant and a perfect base for exploring south east Cornwall. Spotlessly clean and very well equipped, The Sheiling is a characterful delight.

Mrs Maynard

We knew what to expect as this was our third stay here. This is a superbly equipped property, full of fascinating memorabilia collected by the owner's mother. We regret we had never met her and listened to the many stories she would have had to tell. We would have liked to stay long enough to read all the hundreds of books!

Mrs Mayo

Fantastic location and the most amazing, peaceful gardens. We enjoyed our time at The Sheiling.

Mrs Clare

This cottage was just perfect. Very comfortable and homely and in a lovely area close to the harbour and the pub. Just delightful in every respect. Can't recommend highly enough.
