Retreat from modern life to Mrs Higgs and experience the stillness and simplicity of a bygone era. Originally built in 1835 as a hunting lodge, this historical stone home stands alone in the woods, perfectly preserved in time. There's even a wood-fired hot tub ensuring a little bit of luxury.

Set within a 2500-acre private estate, here you are truly secluded in a world of your own. Too far removed to be connected, Mrs Higgs is completely off grid, with solar powered lighting and refrigeration, water pumped from a local spring and heating provided by wood-burning stoves. A couple of concessions have been made in the form of a gas burning kitchen stove, instant hot water and a flushing toilet (very luxurious - we know!). Bottled water is also provided for drinking and Mrs Higgs is WiFi-free so the noise and busyness of modern life can be left behind.

Upon arrival at the estate, you'll be met at a meeting point where parking is available during the winter months. Here you'll be transferred to an appropriate vehicle and driven to the property. A brief tour will be given before you are left to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Mrs Higgs. Still should you need anything, someone will be available throughout your stay to address any questions or concerns.

Upside-down in design, on entry you'll find yourself upstairs, on a small landing from which two bedrooms can be located; one double and one twin. Tastefully adorned, these rooms are comfortable whilst honouring the history of the property. Down a rustic wooden staircase, you'll find a quaint kitchen/dining area, complete with cooking utensils, gas stove, kettle and refrigeration. Alongside this sits the lounge space which features a vintage leather sofa and wood-burner. Perfect for evenings spent reading, playing board games or roasting marshmallows on the fire.

To the rear of the property you'll find the wooden outhouse. Decorated with a beautiful patinated tile and housing the toilet and hot power shower. Simple living has never been so glorious. Outside, to the front of the property, there's also a fire-pit, hand-crafted dining furniture and a wood-burning hot tub. With the natural world as your only neighbour you can relax and unwind confident in the knowledge of your total privacy.

Miss Henderson

What a beautiful place to stay! We had a truly wonderful time at Mrs Higgs, exploring the forest, relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying reading in front of the fire. The kitchen was well equipped and the bed was comfy. There is sporadic phone signal so you aren’t 100% cut off, good if there’s an emergency. The bathroom is better than your average camping bathroom! The wood fired hot tub was delightful and stayed hot for hours.

Miss Dean

Very much enjoyed Mrs Higgs, a break away from it all. The lack of modern technology (no plugs, no charging points) gives you the chance to breathe and just enjoy the simple things. We would definitely visit again and would recommend it to others.

Mr Joshua

Sockets. Mention the status of energy provision.

Dr Retford

An idyllic and secluded property that is very well equipped and cosy. This really was a wonderful break that made our Christmas wishes come true. Vehicle access description is correct, so do not underestimate the instructions or offer of transfer.

Mrs McKay

A total digital detox. Completely away from the hustle and bustle. Access via the track is sketchy as it is used by tractors and is very pitted. As mentioned not for sports cars but even the Volvo had some issues. Not so bad empty of people and baggage. Great get away from everything.

Mrs Harris

Peaceful cottage accommodation satisfactory but needed some maintenance ie many of the bulbs needed replacing. Equipment satisfactory. We were only 2 but there would not be enough soft seating for 4.
