Reviews

This truly rural barn conversion has a contemporary modern interior offering everything you could want from a get away from it all holiday. The Blue Hemmel is situated in the depths of the stunning Northumberland countryside on the edge of Kielder Forest, close to Hadrian's Wall, and is surrounded by flocks of sheep in the fields - you may even catch a glimpse of deer or red squirrels if you're lucky.

In the evening watch the stars pop out in this designated 'Dark Skies' area and marvel at the view of the Milky Way. You'll be a mile from your nearest neighbours (the owner) so while we can't offer you a pub at the end of the road, there is peace, wildlife and 800 acres to explore. The owner takes sustainibility seriously and this beautiful property boasts eco credentials such as solar-powered heating, owl boxes and wildflower planting.

The spacious open plan living area is light and bright with original beams, a vaulted ceiling and windows overlooking the charming garden and forest beyond. This sociable living space is warmed by under-floor heating and a cosy wood-burning stove, perfect for colder months. The kitchen has been beautifully designed with a large central island taking pride of place, perch and enjoy watching the cook at work or sip your morning cappuccino. The farmhouse dining-table is a great place to enjoy a meal together and discuss the day's adventures.

Cosy up on the sofa which curves around the wood-burner. The TV boasts Netflix, Amazon Prime, NOW TV, BBC iPlayer, ITVX and More 4, but please note that due to the location there are no live terrestrial channels.

Two comfy armchairs and a card table are ideal for playing one of the many games provided. For music lovers the Crosley turntable comes with a selection of classic LPs. Boogie on down to Abba and Queen if the mood takes you! The owner has also pulled together some themed playlists to share with you, perfect at different times of the day.

Three fabulously designed bedrooms all have doors to the patio and one has an en suite. A luxurious family bathroom and a large utility/boot-room complete the accommodation.

Outside you will find more space and plenty of sheep! The patio area overlooks the spectacular views. Sit around the fire-pit and toast some marshmallows or get out the barbecue and cook up a warming feast. Or to make the most of the area you are visiting swap the fire-pit and use the specially levelled platform complete with telescope and gaze at your very own sky at night.

Good or bad, we publish all the reviews left by the guests who have stayed at this property.

Mrs Bale

Wow you are in for a treat if you have book this accommodation. Everything you could possibly need is in the barn and it is so comfortable and warm. Although slightly remote this was part of the appeal for us. It was a true escape from life for a short time. We have stayed in several holiday homes and this was by far the best. We didn’t want to leave.

Mr Adley

The Blue Hemmel is truly stunning. Remote and off-grid in an amazing location, but with everything you need. There is nothing missing from this property, it is truly a home from home. Simon, the host has clearly thought of everything you could need and more.

Mrs Mulholland

I can thoroughly recommend this beautiful barn. From picturesque walks to stargazing it fits the bill. The property is equipped to the highest standard, it's immaculately presented, and the internal view is matched by the amazing external view. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely be returning.

Mr Hingston

We've stayed in many places, over many years, but The Blue Hemmel may well be our favourite. Impeccably designed, beautiful interior, funky but not fussy and completely welcoming, we'd love to come back. The owner is also fantastic - great directions, good comms during the week and clearly is someone rightly proud of their place. Oh, and the Alex bespoke playlists? Tremendous :)

Mr Noakes

Great cottage in a lovely location. It was clean comfortable and had all the comforts of home. A lot of care has gone into making everyone feel welcome. Thank you Simon for the use of your cottage, we had had a wonderful week.

Mrs Oakes

Blue Hemmel exceeded our expectations. A truly wonderful cottage in a remote setting. If you are looking for only the sights and sounds of nature with walking from the doorstep then this cottage is for you. Inside, the cottage is superbly appointed. Stylish, comfortable with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Simon the owner was extremely helpful. We will definitely revisit!

Mrs Sorby

This is the most wonderful cottage and a holiday experience not to be missed. It must be the most luxurious and remote off grid cottage in the UK. Simon couldn't have been more welcoming and the play lists he'd arranged were so appropriate and certainly made you smile. The star gazing session we booked through Simon was mind blowing and so informative, even the clouds cleared for about half an hour :-) The cottage was immaculately clean and the interior design felt like a fabulous hotel. There aren't enough words to describe how special this place is.

Mr Bonner

There are not enough amazing superlatives to describe this property and its location!

Mr Shouler

A beautiful cottage, in a stunning location, providing the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind. Also ideally situated to visit the main attractions along Hadrian’s Wall. Make sure you pack your walking gear, as you can explore the beauty of the Kielder Forest directly from your front door.
