Customer reviews

Good or bad, we publish all the reviews left by the guests who have stayed at this property.

Mrs England

Absolutely lovely cottage. Very comfortable lounge with the wood burner lit and just the side lamps turned on. Fabulous bed to sleep in. The kitchen is well equipped for whatever you might want to cook. The surrounding woods are a joy to walk in (our dog thought she was in heaven)!! We definitely want to return some time soon!!

Mrs Freeman

Excellent location and well equipped cottage.

Mrs Bradshaw

Lovely well equipped cottage deep in Devon countryside. Easy walks from the cottage and good access to both Dartmoor and beach if you want a bit of both!

Mrs Robinson

A wonderful dog friendly cottage in rural Devon. Masses of woodland trails to explore and a cosy, comfortable cottage to relax in. The large enclosed garden, off lead walking trails, wooden / tiled floors and separate utility room make it a perfect dog friendly holiday.

Mr Starr

Lovely property, quite the drive to the property down the track, but thats what makes it. Peaceful, lovely walks. Sit in the garden just listening to nature. Then at night star gazing in complete darkness listening to the owls. Perfect place to get away from everything.

Mrs North

Lovely setting but quite remote

Miss Davis

We had the most fantastic stay. Very very quiet, comfy beds, lots of great walks. The kitchen has all the utensils you could need, the log basket for the fire is massive. We could not recommend it enough. By far my favourite place to stay so far. Sam the owner was very helpful and has a great story or all the trees he has planted.

Mr Morriss

Great property, great location, only 30 mins from Bude.

Mr Potts

Lovely to return to Grenlecotte and feel the peacefulness of the farm again. It's great to be able to let the children be children and explore the woods, playing hide and seek instead of playing on gadgets. My youngest saw a deer close up in the forest which was just magical. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed using the barbecue and sitting out looking at the stars, as well as walking to the Devils Stone Inn at Shebbear a couple of times for good meals with a warm welcome. We hired bikes at Great Torrington and rode some of the Tarka Trail this time too. Sam it's a privilege to stay on your farm and the boys have already asked if we can go back!

Mr Wilkins

We had a lovely week at Grenlecotte Cottage. The cottage is well equipped and spacious. Plenty of garden space for us and our dog. Conveniently located for the Tarka Trail. We like this cottage so much we have stayed here twice now and would happily return again. The only issue we had was the WiFi router in the cottage struggled to cope when more than one device was using it.

Mrs Rookes

Grenlecotte cottage was everything we had hoped for spotlessly clean, very comfy beds, well equipped and homely. The garden was fully enclosed which was great for our German shepherd. The forest is beautiful, vast and full of wildlife. We found different walking routes every day, you will need wellies though! ( although there is a supply in the games room if you forget). A word of caution, if you have a dog who likes to chase there is a large deer population in the forest, our dog took off after a deer within an hour of being there. We kept her on a long line for the rest of the week and to be honest it didn’t seem to effect her enjoyment, with so many scents to sniff she had a great time! Previous reviews have commented on the track leading to the cottages being difficult but we didn’t find it too bad at all. This is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for a truly relaxing break and somewhere to embrace nature. It was peaceful and tranquil and really left us all feeling mentally refreshed. We are already planning to return a couple of times next year.

Mrs Rowthorn

Great place to stay we love it so much this was our 5th time and have already booked for next year. Surrounded by nature in the forest and clear skies at night you can see the stars, so peaceful and quiet except for the sounds of the birds. Sam is a very friendly helpful owner and nothing is to much trouble you only have to ask, calls by to say hello at the beginning of your stay but not intrusive. Very good for multiple dog owners allowing up to 5 where most holiday cottages allow only 2 dogs. This year stone had been put down outside the cottages which made it much cleaner as it used to get quite muddy at times. Towels and bedding are also fresh and clean and the cottage is always warm and comfortable.

Mrs Rowthorn

Great place to stay if you enjoy peace & quiet with loads of nature. Very friendly helpful owner.

mrs povey

This cottage is in a perfect location for rest and relaxation. The size of the property and configuration was perfect. Garden was wonderful for that peaceful dinning experience. Completely dog friendly. However it is not up to the usual standard I have received from classic cottages. The cottage is now over due decorating inside and out. The furniture is now passed its best. The sofa was very dirty and just glad we had brough a few throws with us. If this cottage was brought up to date it would be a definite re visit from me.

Mr Wilson

Great property if you like remote ,a very bumpy path way so be careful (if you have dogs !! remember to take a brush as the seeds from the grasses. Cling on.... Torch provided which was very helpful....

Mr Potts

We loved the calm and peacefulness, and all the birds and wildlife we heard and saw. The stars on a clear night are unbelievable! Our boys enjoyed the games room and playing in the woods. There’s a well hidden tree house for the adventurous! There was always somewhere new to explore with the dog – she wanted to stay so much that I had to carry her to the car when we left! You can easily spend all day exploring, or just enjoying the garden, but when we did venture further afield we had a great walk on the Tarka Trail after a nice lunch at East Yarde café, liked the small shops in Great Torrington, and enjoyed good meals at the friendly pubs in Sheepwash and Shebbear. The owners are very friendly and helpful – it really is the perfect place!

Mrs Naughton

Wonderful spacious cottage in a remote location. Don't expect to walk to a local pub but the trade-off is well worth it; lovely woodland walks from your doorstep meant we could get out with the dogs morning and evening with no fuss. The cottage is well furnished and kitted out so you will want for nothing. The garden is fenced off with a gate so you don't have to worry about the dogs :) Lots of options for daytrips as required. Would recommend Yarde Orchard Cafe on the Tarka Trail (close by, managed to walk the dogs early then end at the cafe with a really decent coffee and sausage baguette). Boscastle is worth a drive/visit (had a swim in the harbour when the tide was out - stunning) although would aim to get there early before the masses in season. If you are beachy then Westward Ho Beach has both no-dog and dog-friendly areas with loads of room, parking, cafes, etc.

Miss Mansell

Grenlecotte Cottage is beautiful in a secluded, rural location. It is bright and airy and has everything you need. The garden is spacious and our dog loved it. Though Grasscott Farm felt a bit like a wilderness. And the views of the area from the cottage weren't exactly amazing, just unkempt trees and brambles. And we never got to see any wildlife at all, apart from the birds. And a squirrel. The track is pretty unstable in part so you do need a robust car. And the actual location is quite far from places you may wish to see, unless you don't mind spending 30 minutes or more travelling. And you may need a map to not get lost! I loved going to Dunsland estate. Beautiful there and not too far away. In terms of eating out...not so good. Maybe it was the time of year (we were there the week before the kids broke up) but many pubs weren't serving food and what they did serve, wasn't that great and lacked in variety. Good shop at Shebbear though.

Mrs Green

This cottage is a fantastic place to stay. Peaceful and so relaxing with amazing dog walks on the doorstep. This was our 7th year staying and we do hope to return in 2023.

Mrs Vaisset

A wonderful property in a stunning location! Perfect for rest and relaxation.

Miss Strange

Grenlecotte Cottage was a delightful place to stay surrounded by a beautiful wood to explore. The cottage was warm and inviting after a day out either on the beach or walking the Tarks trail. The cottage is spacious with plenty of room to relax either inside or out. Sam the owner called by to say ‘Hello’ with extra things that were needed for the cottage and said if we need anything he was just a text away.

Mrs Rush

The cottage is in a lovely spot, very quiet and peaceful with walks from the front door. Our two dogs loved the spacious garden. The cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The owner was friendly and helpful without intruding on the holiday.

Mrs Billson

We had a lovely weeks stay at Grenlecotte during May 2022. This lovely comfy cottage is well worth a visit , nestled in a beautiful woodland area. Plenty of woodland trails to walk with the dogs. Highly recommended.

Mrs Bodel

If its peace and quiet you are after this is the place. Lovely walks through the forest for the dogs. Lovely cottage with All the equipment you need there. Car journey of about 30-40 minutes to beaches and town centres. Fully enclosed garden looking out over the forest and wildlife all around. Spectaculary big beds, perfect.

Miss Newton

We absolutely loved our stay at this beautiful cottage. It is very spacious and very comfortable. It a great place for the dogs , the garden is large and there is a large area of woodland that guests are free to explore around the cottage . There is a large warm utility room which makes it easy to dry wet towels and walking boots. The cottage in located down a 1mile track so the location is really peaceful .We were about 30minutes drive from a dog friendly beach at Northam from where you can walk to Westward Ho. We enjoyed a meal at the Half moon Inn at Sheepwash. We enjoyed exploring the North Devon coast and driving a bit further to Dartmoor .we would recommend the walk at Fingle bridge from Castle Drogo and along the river Teign.

mrs rowthorn

We enjoyed our 2nd stay in Grenlecotte cottage love it so much have already booked for next year. Warm & comfortable with everything you need, great for anyone with dogs, so quiet & peaceful away from it all with plenty of wildlife, We see birds like goldcrest & even a bullfinch & lovely to have 4 deer just outside the garden one evening just before dark. Even with it being off the beaten track we were able to get a Sainsbury’s delivery. Very helpful friendly owner.

Mrs Mattock

Lovely cottage with modern interior and comfortable furnishings

Mr Price

Lovely spacious cottage with huge beds. Peaceful location with plenty of woodland walks. Sam the owner popped by for a chat to make sure everything was OK which was a lovely touch. We were a party of 4 with 5 dogs. The garden is a good size and secure for the dogs. The cottage had everything we needed for a week away. The village shop in Shebbear has all the essentials you will need. Overall a lovely week in Devon and I would highly recommended the cottage.

Mrs Finch

It was lovely there the cottage the forest the areas around there great for dogs or just sitting in the garden the birds are singing all day it was LUSH !

Mr Hilder

Splendid isolation, wildlife, woodland mystery and tranquility.

Mrs Hoskins

Lovely property in beautiful surroundings and a fantastic location. Property was well equipped, very clean and had a great layout, Perfect for dogs. Owner came to introduce himself and was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge about the surrounding area. I have recommended this property to friends and will be coming back in the future. This is a great holiday property for anytime of the year and would make a delightful Christmas venue, cosy and beautiful.

mrs rowthorn

Lovely cosy cottage, very quiet & peaceful off the beaten track, you can see & hear wildlife in the garden & surrounding area. Very comfy extra large bed with feather & down pillows & duvet. Dog friendly cottage with hard floors & enclosed garden keep a eye on miniature breeds they may try & get through the rabbit fenceing around the garden. Nice walking in the forest bring your wellies maybe muddy. Very helpful friendly owner but not intrusive. Enjoyed our stay would come again.

Mrs Green

Would highly recommend a stay at this lovely secluded cottage.

Mr Barnes

This was our second visit to Grenlecotte cottage and it was exactly the same as before - amazing. We do allot of short cottage breaks in the UK throughout the year and this is is one of our favourite places. We'll certainly be back next year. Thanks Sam fur having us.

Mrs Naylor-Maury

The cottage felt like home from home and the owner was very friendly. I don't think there was anything we needed in addition to the facilities that were already there. The bed was enormous!! This is a lovely location for peace and quiet and exploring with the dogs without the worry of livestock around every corner. Bring your wellies :-). There is no passing traffic and only the occasional farm vehicle. We will definitely be back.

Mrs Symington

Lovely place to stay would stay here again. Owner came to say hi when we arrived whuch was a nice touch. Lovely surroundings and property.

Miss Price

Couldn't find anything to fault with this cottage. Hope to book next year.

Mrs Harper-Green

If you are looking for peace & tranquility then Grenlecotte Cottage is the place. Amazing walks through the forest and a lovely home away from home. I’d buy it if i could!

Mrs Green

A perfect cottage for a relaxing holiday. Dog friendly and lots of amazing walks just outside the front door. Would highly reccommend a stay here.

Mrs Laverty

If you want to get away from it all then this is the perfect place, relaxing and peaceful. The walks are endless and a great chance to see wildlife. I will be returning.

Mr Telford

Cottage was spacious, comfortable, well equipped and above all quiet and peaceful. Good dog / drying room, well equipped kitchen, just an all round lovely place to stay for both us and the dogs. Hope to stay there again soon. Judy Telford

Mrs Henley

A well equipped and maintained cottage. A bit off the beaten track but well worth the journey for the acres of forest and meadow. The access track has been improved and is partially concrete. It is a working forest farm, so there is some forestry work going on through the week. A real hidden gem.

Mrs Goldsmith

Fantastic cottage in a fantastic location - we had a lovely time and would definitely go back again.

Mrs Barnes

Had a fabulous time. Bit hard to find but once there dogs and humans had a wonderful time. Superb walkies and friendly local pubs. Perfect for the getaway both dogs and humans. Cosey inside with the fire and enclosed garden for the dogs. Wonderful will be back again.

Mrs Green

A relaxing secluded cottage with fabulous dog walks right on the doorstep. We hope to return soon.

Mrs Brander

This is our favourite property we've stayed in. It was perfect for us on every level. Exceeded our expectations. The kitchen facilitates are suburb and very well equipped - the drying room was such a necessity that we didn't know we even needed!

Dr Russell

This cottage is light, bright, cosy and warm - we really appreciated the tranquility of the woodland and farm setting.

Mr Merrington

An absolutely fab place to stay with dogs - big enclosed garden, and superb walks on the doorstep

Mr Roberts

A very homely space which the kiddies loved just as much as we did. A nice touch providing a decorated christmas tree.

Mrs Hughes

Great location especially if you have dogs? But not clean enough .

Mrs Sellis

Lovely spacious comfy cottage with an enclosed garden which is great for kids and dogs! Bumpy road which never fails to amuse us and is fine in a car. Gorgeous walks through forest from front door. It really is a break from it all,

Mrs Green

A gem of a cottage with great walks on the doorstep. Fantastic for dog walkers.

Mrs O'Keefe

Fabulous cottage, lots of space (even with our large lab & 2 teenagers) everything you could need is there. Beautiful rural settings. Would highly recommend.

Mrs Evans

Excellent cottage and wonderfully peaceful location! Our fourth visit and we shall certainly come back.

Mrs Whincup

This was the perfect cottage for a peaceful week for our family and our canine companion. It was fantastic to have the freedom of the forest right on the doorstep, and connected to footpaths further afield for easy exploring. The cottage was ideal; comfortable, roomy, very well-appointed and snug.

Mrs Green

A perfect, secluded place to stay to relax and unwind! Well equipped;cosy;dog friendly with lots of great walks just on the doorstep. We had a fabulous stay and hope to return.

Mrs Sellis

Perfect for a great escape from modern day living!

Mrs Bennett

An excellent retreat away from city life - batteries totally recharged!

Mr Truman

The cottage is in a peaceful, rural location. There is lots of natural light in the cottage and it is well equipped and warm. Really handy boot/laundry room. Showing some signs of wear and tear and some of the areas within the estate are hard to get to as shrubs and trees have matured over the years. The approach track is quite bumpy but we managed with our VW Golf, although a bit tiresome if making multiple trips in one day.

Mrs Hirst

The perfect getaway for a family holiday in Devon. Comfortable and clean.

Dr Lees-Maffei

A hidden gem!

Mrs Burbridge

Peaceful location, lovely spacious comfortable cottage. Home from home.

Ms Spanton-Walker

Grenlecotte is the perfect bolt hole. In beautiful and peaceful surroundings, the cottage is comfortable, pretty and cosy, great for whatever the weather. We love its remote location, the wonderful walks and the views. This is our third visit and we look forward to it every year. Great for families and dogs esp if you want some peace and quiet.

Mrs Bathurst

Wonderfully light and airy cottage, with a feel of luxury to it. Beds were very comfortable. Very peaceful surroundings, although as the cottage is situated on a working forestry site, some operations were done early in the morning or later at night occasionally. I was especially pleased with the shared facilities of the use of a trampoline and swing which our 3 year old loved! Be aware that the access track to the cottage is a mile of heavily potholed dirt track. But overall, I would thoroughly recommend this cottage.

Mrs Evans

A fantastic cottage set in an idyllic location. If you love peace and tranquility you will love this place.

Mrs Parsons

The biggest bed ever and one of the most comfortable , very relaxing holiday, just wish we had had better weather. Good Walks from the doorstep.

Mr Simmonds

The one mile lane leading to cottage was full of craters, making it ver y difficult to drive along, bad enough to cause damage to a car.

Mr Shotton

Lovely location, this was our second visit but we stayed in the adjacent cottage previously and enjoyed it there (this cottage was booked so we stayed in Grenlecotte). The location is lovely for peace and quiet and our dogs love walking around the area, the only real issue we had was with flies within this cottage, they seem to be a problem around this time of year (Oct) as it was mentioned in the visitors book several times. Other than that it was fine.
