Poachers Cottage is at the heart of the historic north Devon fishing village of Appledore, set in a little cobbled courtyard off the iconic Irsha Street, a stone's throw from the water where the wide estuary of the River Taw meets the open sea.

The cottage is in the perfect location for strolling along the Quay watching the sailing boats, sampling the local deli, cafes and restaurants, and visiting the art and craft galleries that are tucked away in the traditional network of tiny alleyways. Walkers could try the South West Coast Path, which runs less than 20 steps from the front door, across the sand dunes and landmark pebble ridge towards Westward Ho! and beyond.

Appledore is well served by friendly local pubs, many with great food and live music to enjoy. Step out of the pretty courtyard and try the Royal George, a recently reopened and already widely-renowned gastro pub for the most stunning views and a delicious menu. Appledore has many events running through the year – the acclaimed and star-studded Appledore Book Festival takes place every September, there's a carnival and regatta in the summer, regular gig-rowing spectacles and more.

The ground floor of this cosy cottage has a sitting-room with characterful fireplace and a kitchen/dining-room with a stone floor that is ideal for four-legged friends who might have taken a dip in the sea. Steep turning cottage stairs (with handrails) lead up to the two bedrooms which overlook the courtyard. There are two bathrooms upstairs too – one en suite to the main bedroom with a bath and shower, and the other with a large shower cubicle.

For those who want to explore further afield, a Torridge Council parking 'tourist pass' is around £45 per week, and can be used across the district. The nearest car park is tucked just behind Poachers Cottage, so only a few minutes' walk away.

Mrs Kingsnorth

We had a lovely post Christmas stay at Poachers Cottage. Its location is great- short walk to the centre of the town for pubs, restaurants , cafes and fish and chips! We appreciated the comfortable bed, the well equipped kitchen and the wine and biscuits kindly left by the owners. Appledore is only a 40 minute drive to the beaches of North Cornwall too. An added bonus!

Mr Snee

This was our second stay at Poacher's. Our family (2 × adults, son aged 14 & daughter aged 12) had another fantastic week here. The cottage is well located in beautiful Appledore in a stunning part of North Devon. There is so much to do in the local area and Poacher's is the perfect base, in a quiet court just off lovely Irsha Street, mere steps away from two waterside pubs and a five minute walk from Appledore Quay. The cottage is spotless. very well decorated, has a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, plenty of storage in the bedrooms for clothing and it is useful having two bathrooms. Whilst there is no on site parking, there is a car park a stone's throw from the cottage. We bought a weekly ticket and it was very convenient. We went on some super walks (from the cottage to Northam Burrows and we had a wonderfulntime further up the coast at Hartland Quay), jumped in the waves at Westward Ho! , caught the small ferry across the estuary to Instow, went crabbing on the quay, spent 2 hours on a traditional Appledore lugger (with Appledore Sails - highly recommended), had fish & chips whilst watching the Appledore Brass band give their weekly evening performance on the quay and more. We enjoyed some lovely meals in Appledore and stocked up on local produce at John's deli. There are an array of gift shops, eateries, a maritime museum, boat trips, stunning views and unforgettable sunsets. Come to Appledore and stay in Poacher's Cottage - it really has everything you need for the perfect Devon holiday. We are planning our third visit.

Mr Kimber

Appledore is a delightful small town on the Torridge estuary with some terrific independent shops, pubs and restaurants. It is an excellent centre for exploring the North Devon coast and Poacher's Cottage is the perfect place to stay. It's a cosy and comfortable character cottage in the most attractive part of town. It's just yards from the sea, but quiet and secluded. I recommend it without hesitation.

Mrs Puffitt

Amazing location literally a stone’s throw from the sea and 2 pubs with great food and views of the coast and beautiful scenery. The cottage is extremely peaceful and we all slept really well in the comfortable beds. Very central to places like Clovelly, Saunford Sands, Westwood Ho and Heartland.

Mrs Townsend

Great apart from contact and watertemperature

Mr Adriano

Great location for the amenities in Appledore, particularly The Royal George, which is a dozen steps from the front door. It has excellent food, service and views. Wonderful location for access to the surrounding area. Best food and beverage discoveries Hockings Ice Cream and Sandford Orchards Devon Red Cider. Lovely seafood dinner at The Boathouse, Instow. Our last meal of the holiday at the Beaver Inn Appledore, two minutes from the cottage, was extremely disappointing. We loved the quirkiness of the cottage, particularly the stairs and its location in a courtyard. Definitely a bonus that the front door didn't open out into the road, though the road is extremely quiet unless the great Mini parade is back in town. The cottage is well decorated with all amenities working 100%. The bed were very comfortable especially the pillows, which my 20-year-old son loved. Highly recommend the Poachers' Cottage.

Mrs Boyden-Wilson

Super clean Great location, comfy bedrooms. Car park really near. Nice to have Alexa and USB ports

Mrs Jones

Beautiful cottage tastefully and lovingly decorated beautiful furnishings a real home from home nothing at all was missing . Situated in a great position close to the shops pubs and restaurants . The area was quiet and the beds very comfortable all slept so well. Would definitely return loved it thank you

Miss Daw

We've just spent a week staying in Poacher's Cottage, Appledore and can certainly recommend this cottage if you are looking for a lovely, well presented, 2 bedroomed cottage in an easy accessible, quiet area of Appledore. Just yards from 2 very good pubs, both The Royal George and The Beaver serve very good food. Near to excellent sandy dog friendly beaches - what more could you want!

Mrs Bartlett

Delightful cozy cottage in great location.

Mrs Morris

A very clean and spacious cottage. It had everything we needed for a relaxing holiday. The area is beautiful and everyone was so friendly. The car park is only a few minutes walk away as are the local pubs and restaurants. We would recommend this cottage and will certainly be using it again.

Mr Andrew

A beautiful, clean, well equipped cottage. Our first time in Devon and Appledore, which was just so lovely. Very impressed with the cottage and the surroundings. We would definitely like to come back one day. Thank you. Ian Andrew

Ms King

Lovely cottage and a great base for walking the Coast Path. Very convenient for pubs and Deli and also very quiet.

Mrs Cann

We loved Poacher’s cottage and Appledore. Great half term with our 15, and 11 year old girls and dog! Plenty of great places to eat, drink and explore nearby. Spoilt for choice. Wonderful walks from the doorstep mingling with the sheep and horses on Northam Burrows. The George is spitting distance with great food overlooking the sea. Don’t be put off by the lack of parking - we bought a tourist permit and had no problems. Wonderful, wonderful week.

Ms Newton

Very good location. Right by the Royal George and a stones throw from theBeaver Inn. Beware the tourist pass, it starts at 8am on the first day you book and will expire at 6pm on the day before your departure. You therefore either need to start it the day after your arrival and pay for a ticket for the time you arrive to 6pm that day or decide to leave before 8am on your final day or pay for a ticket between 8am and your departure time. It’s a comfortable cottage and well equipped.

Mrs Salmon

Peace and quiet in a historic cottage.

Mrs Healy

Great location, very warm and welcoming cottage but note about the stairs is not to be under estimated - they are very steep!

Mr Johns

Poachers Cottage is in a superb location and is a home from home. There are lovely walks right from the door and there are plenty of great places to eat as well. It’s comfortable and well equipped, can’t really recommend it highly enough.

Ms Buchan

Poachers Cottage is a beautiful, well-equipped home from home in an excellent location for exploring Appledore and North Devon. The home comforts were plentiful while the quality and cleanliness were second to none. A lovely cottage!

Mrs Morgan

A charming cottage in an lovely part of Appledore. Very clean and well-equipped. The stairs are very steep and narrow but this was not a problem for us.

Mrs Smith

Lovely comfortable cottage in a lovely area.

Miss Byrne

Do come to Appledore and stay in Poachers Cottage if you want a sophisticated setting. There are lots of places to eat out, virtually on the doorstep. Its also a good place to use as a base and venture elsewhere. I would recommend a trip to Clovelly which is also breathtaking. Appledore is very dog friendly so if you have pooches, they will love it too. The locals are very friendly and welcoming which is always nice. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Sue

Mrs Hancock

We really Loved the cosy cottage and location was perfect for our walking eating and drinking week with great pub around the corner - the beaver - and a good pub restaurant at the end of the road. A lot better than anything I found on Airbnb. My only comment would be that the mattresses in the twin room were not comfortable for adults . Better quality mattresses would have made it a perfect week!

Mr Snee

Appledore is a quiet, pretty village next to a beautiful estuary. If you want to be near North Devon's many attractions, this is not the place for you but if you are looking for a comfortable cottage close to pubs and the South West coastal path, this would be a good bet. Our family (2x adults & 2x children) had a lovely weekend in this comfortable and well equipped cottage. We did a number of coastal walks, played in the waves at nearby Westward Ho!, visited the Milky Way adventure Park and enjoyed crabbing at Appledore Quay. We liked being able to walk out for a dinner at a number of eateries without needing the car. I have a sneaking feeling that we shall return.

Mrs Marshall

We loved our stay in Poachers Cottage, from the moment we arrived to the moment we left it was pure relaxation. The cottage is quirky but lovely and is a stone's throw away from some fantastic pubs. Appledore itself is gorgeous - lovely park for the children, great crabbing on the promenade - amazing coffee from the Coffee Cabin. We didn't want to come home!!

Mrs Gooch

Delightful cottage with comfortable furnishings & Wifi, appliances etc. Cottage is cosy so it might be a challenge to entertain the kids on rainy days A few steps to views of the estuary, 2 excellent pubs & 10 mins walk to Appledore for excellent delicatessen, ice creams, coffee shops etc

Mrs May

Very good strongly recommend it

Mrs Oldnall

Loved our stay ,just be aware of very steep winding staircase . Right on quay side ,close to car park.

Mrs Blackburn

Beautifully equipped comfy cottage, excellent location for walks and eating out with good places to eat which were able to cater for my gluten free dietary requirements.

Mr Price

Lovely cosy cottage in a great location for a winter break! Restaurant/pubs all within a short walk so we didn’t need to use the car! The car park behind the cottage was ideal as there is no parking at the cottage. We would definitely stay here again!

Mrs Griffiths

Our second visit to poachers cottage. Such a comfortable place, with everything you could need in a great location. Some lovely restaurants and cafes, all within walking distance. We will definitely be returning.

Mr Thorpe

We had a fantastic stay at the cottage, very clean great location. Thanks to the team involved.

Mrs Holmes

Highly recommended for a peaceful get away

Mrs Ransome

We were surprised to find that the staircase was more like a spiral. We could see from the photo that the bottom was bending round but thought it would then go straight up. It was a challenge for two old ladies with knee problems. I suggest it should be noted in the original description in future. There were very good rails but one at the bottom on the right hand side would be very useful.

Mrs Bishop

This was our first family holiday taking the dog with us - it was truly wonderful from start to finish!! The cottage is amazing, it felt so home like and plenty of room for us all. Our children loved it and want to return very soon. Appledore was beautiful, we throughly enjoyed looking round and long beach walks.

Mrs Glennon

It is a lovely cottage central to everything in beautiful Appledore and all it dog friendly restaurants and pubs and shops. It was great being 1 minute from seeing the river in the morning. We got a parking permit for the car park at the back of the cottage and always got a space. The stairs are very very steep. I only given 4 stars because of the stairs.

Mrs Pascalides

A wonderful and welcoming cottage in a picturesque seaside village. Complete with all the modern conveniences (coffee maker, streaming services, dishwasher) and a short walk from the river and amenities in the village. The cottage is well-maintained and clean on arrival, with good-sized rooms and kitchen. It’s located in a quiet courtyard but very near to two pubs. We loved staying there!

Mrs Beckett

Beware of the steep, sharply turning stairs!

Mrs Isbell

Excellent Venue within many other sights by car and very comfy cottage

Mrs O'Gorman

A stunning cottage which was warm and comfortable. Dont let the lack parking put you off , it was never a problem with a car park just 2 min walk or a larger one 5 min walk along the quayside. We loved our stay

Mrs Usherwood

Beautiful cozy cottage, relaxing and wonderful place to stay! We will be back

Mrs Hallett

Excellent cottage in a lovely location

Mrs Williamson

Our second stay at Poachers, very cosy, comfortable, clean cottage. Lovely location.

Mrs Cooper

Brilliant cottage, some noise from the local pub but that offsets against the great location to everything. Very comfortable cottage. Be aware of the steep stairs though! We eventually got used to them but they were a little steep. My daughter said she wants to live in a cottage like this when she grows up!

Mrs Richards

Great location in a fabulous setting. Just 30 paces to a wonderful pub but very quiet off a small side street. Well recommended.

Dr Chatterjee

Comfortable and cozy cottage which is well equipped and excellent standard of linen and curtains, cushions etc.

Mrs Sparks

A cosy, comfortable, well equipped cottage which is close to all amenities offered by Appledore.

Mrs Blick

Lovely stay in a quiet spot with everything you need nearby.

Mr Porter

Poacher's Cottage is a beautiful, homely little place that's very comfortable for 4. Two bathrooms is a real luxury and it is surprisingly spacious generally. Having the Royal George 20 yards away is a real bonus but all of Appledore is delightful. The stairs are steep for older guests but there are railings both sides, so fine with a little care. All in all, a wonderful place to stay and heartily recommended!

Mrs White

Lovely cottage in a fabulous location- our first visit to Appledore and we fell in love with it

Mr Attard

Not that we are tv fans and dont like wasting precious time , but for someone who is keen , perhaps tv channels were a bit limited, unless we did not understand the netflix instructiions which we did not manage to get as per instructions.

Mrs Griffiths

Poachers cottage is a really lovely comfortable cosy place to stay. It’s in an ideal location with a pub and the sea just a few steps from the front door. It was extremely clean and had everything you would need. Our dog loved all of the walks and it was so nice not to have to use the car. We definitely hope to stay again soon. The only downside are the stairs, which were absolutely fine for us but if you were elderly or had mobility problems then, unfortunately, it’s not for you.

Ms Nunney

Property was very clean on arrival and well-equipped. Nice touch to be greeted with wine, biscuits and milk. Highly recommended. Fantastic location and very friendly neighbours. Overall excellent!

Miss James

Ms Winter

This is a beautiful, snug and well-maintained holiday cottage. Peaceful, very close to the village and lovely walks. I would recommend it to anyone. Appledore is a wonderful village with a real community feel. I would definitely recommend the Market Street Kitchen for ambience, coffee, breakfast, lunch - staff are friendly and helpful, food is of excellent quality and good value for money and they also welcome dogs!

Ms Cruden

Wow this really was a hidden gem, from the moment we arrived we fell in love with the cottage and surrounding Appledore. It was great to find a place so friendly and so far unspoilt. Great food and great company. Can't wait to go again, it will be nice to see The Royal George pub up and running.
