Reviews

As its name implies, The Haven is a lovely stone cottage in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales in the quintessential country village of Gunnerside with its pretty bridge, picturesque cottages, stream and a local Yorkshire pub within strolling distance. Just the place to retreat to after a day's hiking over the beautiful nearby hills and moors. Only a short walk from the River Swale, this is a great place to stay and discover the delights of Swaledale. An unspoilt character Dales cottage, it nevertheless benefits from modern conveniences such as under-floor heating and granite worktops in the kitchen.

Once through the door, admire the stone floors and get ready to cosy up in front of the wood-burner with its stone surround and leaf through one of the many walking books to plan the next day's adventure. The dining kitchen is the perfect place to share a meal of local specialities at the vintage farmhouse table.

Later, climb the stairs from the lounge to the bathroom and two comfortable country-style bedrooms. You will enjoy a restful night's sleep and wake ready and refreshed to take in more of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. The house has a delightful rear courtyard with stone paths bordered by mature bushes and trees, and provides a welcome place to retreat to after a day exploring.

We arrived at the cottage on the 4th January when we woke up on the Sunday morning we had about 10 inches of snow. There is only 1 small municipal approx 10 spaced car park in the village which you have to use. The road outside the property is a farm track so it is not cleared of snow and neither is the car park which was frozen over and very icy and had inches of snow The main road out of the village was clear so we could have travelled out of the village if it was possible to get out of the car park which it wasn't. You cannot predict the weather but this has to be,born in mind if booking in the winter months. We had booked 7 nights in the cottage but due to the forcast of more freezing temperatures and snow we decided to dig the car out and come home early after only 3 days as did other people. We have stayed in Gunnerside before in the Autumn and it is a beautiful place to visit as is the cottage.

The Haven is an outstanding place to stay—comfortable, practical, and welcoming. My son and I spent a wonderful week there over Christmas. We enjoyed fantastic walks around Gunnerside and loved returning to the house each evening to relax in its cozy atmosphere. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

The cottage is in a perfect location. As a family we absolutely love Gunnerside. The only thing that lets this place down in our opinion is the uncomfy and poor quality beds that all need replacing. We actually left a night early because we were all so tired and uncomfortable. No other complaints though.
