Reviews

Originally an 1830s woodman's cottage, this unique detached house is set in 13 acres of private woodland - yet is just two miles from the stunning beaches and charming galleries and shops of St Ives.

The original carriageway winds through the grounds, opening up to a lawned area with a summer-house and a pond. Guests (and their four-legged friends) can enjoy the private walks in the woods.

The house is traditionally furnished and has everything you will need for a family holiday or a gathering with friends at any time of the year. The large kitchen/diner provides an ideal setting for a convivial meal and a catch up, and the conservatory/sun-room makes a lovely space in which to eat or play board games. Two cosy sitting-rooms provide space for both children and adults to relax and the large wood-burner is the perfect spot to snuggle up in front of after a day out exploring and due to the house being in a private woodland has plenty of free logs.

From the main sitting-room, a staircase leads up to the five pretty bedrooms. A stepped landing leads you to the main bedroom, and a separate servant's staircase takes you down to the smallest (or cosiest) of the sitting-rooms. (Take care as this staircase is narrow and steep).

Good or bad, we publish all the reviews left by the guests who have stayed at this property.

Miss Webber

Delightful large property in an ideal location. Kitchen very well equipped and beds very comfy. The garden is large, wild and wonderful, but it is not secure and there is a fast road bordering 1 side of the garden with just a small bank as a boundary.

Mrs Mercer

We loved our week at the Golden Cock Cottage. The cottage was very well equipped and the gardens with woodland was a real bonus. It was well situated for St Ives and walks along the beautiful local beach. It was also handy having a pub serving good food within walking distance.

Mrs Poole

Love this cottage, gardens and woodland. Secluded but yet easy access and close to everything you need and want. Weather was pretty poor, heavy rain nearly every day but spells where the sun came out so we made the most of those times. This is our favourite cottage in an ideal location so another great holiday in Cornwall.

Mrs Howard

Great local pub Great for lawn activities and the surrounding woods. Very spacious retreat for 6 and very homely

Ms Rabone

This was our second visit to Golden Cock and it didn't disappoint us either time. The location is good for the town, estuary and beach. The beds are so comfortable and the heating is sufficient alongside the log burner for colder evenings. The dogs loved the woodland and it wore then out enough to sleep and settle quickly although we take them out with us every time we go anywhere i can imagine the woods are wonderful for children to explore. I could willingly live there forever and never go anywhere else. We love Sennan cove. Phipps pasty shop is delicious and the local Asda very time saving for most things you require.

Mrs Eccles

Golden Cock Cottage is a lovely retreat for those wishing to switch off. Beds comfortable and enough bedrooms to allow for space for the whole family. I would go back again as the garden, woods and surrounding views make for a special place to stay.

Mrs Burrell

We loved our time at the cottage. Charming cottage, and great outdoor space for kids to explore and play. Beds were comfortable, lounges were good spaces to relax in the evening. The kitchen wasn’t clean when we arrived, spillage stains and crumbs on worktops and the table. Bin and cupboard fronts also not wiped from spillages. Didn’t take long to rectify but would have been nice to arrive and not need to do this ourselves. This wouldn’t put us off returning though, we had a great holiday week.

Miss Webber

I loved this cottage, it is beautifully equipped, warm and comfortable. The grounds were perfect for my woodland loving dog. Can't wait to go again.

Mr Lloyd

First stayed there in 1996,then 2 more subsequent visits before our recent visit in July (2022). And yes, it is still a wonderful cottage for a Cornish holiday.

Mrs Smith

We chose this property so the family could meet up after a very difficult couple of years, so pleased we did. A beautiful house in idyllic setting, it exceeded our expectations. Lots of places of interest within easy reach, it really felt like a home from home and we would love to visit again soon.

Mrs Popplestone

Golden cock cottage was everything we wanted, our grandchildren loved the woods as did the dog. The house its self was clean and very well equipped, we all loved our stay and hopefully we will return.

Mr Burton

A wonderful place to stay with family being comfortable and very spacious both inside and out. Beautifully furnished and equipped, it was an absolute joy to stay there. If you are looking for peace and quiet in a woodland setting with no traffic noise then this is the place.

Ms Rabone

We absolutely loved our stay at Golden Cock Cottage, so much so that we hope to return next year. The garden and woods reminded me of Winnie the Pooh's 100 acre wood. We took our 2 dogs and they loved having a run around the garden and a walk through the woods. Some very beautiful old trees in the woods, one big enough for a little treehouse in fact. Brilliant for kids and dogs to have an adventure. The stairs in the house are a little steep so those with limited mobility do take care. We went in early spring so the daffodil fields were stunning and very picturesque. Very convenient location with a supermarket just around the corner. Hayle has a lovely bird watching area.

Mr Chandler

A very homely and spacious cottage. We hired it for our wedding week and it was perfect, especially the large eating area which is where we spent so much time with each other. The second most used was the living room with the log burner and an endless supply of logs. Going for a walk or jog in the grounds was relaxing plus with it's position outside of town there was quick and easy road access to all areas around St Ives and Lands End etc. When we had an enquiry the owner was very quick to respond and couldn't have been more helpful. All in all a very enjoyable stay.

Mr Wright

Amazing place to watch the wildlife , saw and heard woodpeckers , rabbits , squirrels and of course the resident pheasant . Excellent location to visit the lower part of Cornwall . Quiz night at the local was enjoyable . Very relaxing holiday

Mr Baker

Great base, for visiting other areas of Cornwall. It’s nice after a busy day, to shut the gate and have only the birds to listen too. Very well equipped, everything you would need and more. Lovely flat garden to sit and relax or kids or dogs to play on.

Mrs Poole

Amazing outside space. We have 2 large dogs and they loved the outside space, as we did too. We felt totally private and away from the hustle and bustle of the popular tourist areas, yet all these places were easy to get to for visiting and then escaping back to the peace of our holiday home for the week. We were so lucky with the weather too, having lunch outside was lovely. Be aware though we were a little shocked when someone came into the garden and we were walking in the woodland with the dogs. They had gone when I got down to see who they were, but it became apparent that they were just opening up the summer house. The next day we heard a car on the gravel, this turned out to be the gardener, who was very nice and he made a fuss of the dogs, who were delighted with the attention (all be it brief as we were on or way out). I would definitely recommend this cottage for families with children the garden and woodland are magical. The house, although it needs some attention, it is clean, comfortable and has everything you need. Would love to go again sometime but it is expensive for just 2 people really, but we really wanted the space that it offered, so maybe we will treat ourself at some point in the future.

Mrs Baker

Had an amazing week staying at Goldencock Cottage. The cottage is everything you could hope for and the garden is simply breathtaking. It is obvious that the house and garden is very loved and well maintained by the owners. We had fabulous weather and spent many hours enjoying the garden and the outdoor facilities. Already booked again for next year!!!

Ms Clabburn

The cottage far exceeded our expectations and the photos don’t do it justice. We had a fabulous week in a beautiful property and location. The cottage feels very secluded but is actually close to lots of great places to visit. Would happily re-book this cottage if we have the opportunity to return.

Mrs Watson

Literally a home from home, so comfortable and inviting

Mrs Clifford

This is a lovely cottage , very well maintained and clean in a lovely woodland setting. Despite disappointing weather, we enjoyed our stay and hope to visit again another year.

Miss Gunter

We have just come back from a fabulous time at Golden Cock Cottage. The house is wonderful, absolutely perfect for a large family with children and dogs! There is plenty of space in the house and also outside for the children & dogs to run!

MS Kelly

A great space to spend time with family and truly relax. Location is excellent with easy access to the beaches and shops whilst staying in your own oasis.

Mr Vine

Amazing holiday home from home....

Mrs Watson

This cottage exceeded my expectations - and by Day 2 we'd booked to go back!

Ms Hopwood

Beautiful property in a lovely location. We could have stayed forever! So much effort has been made to make the grounds perfect for children and adults to explore together. Perfect for a lockdown break!

Mr Edmondson

This wonderful cottage provides a perfect base for a relaxed holiday.

Mrs Wheatley

Lovely cottage with everything you could hope for, a perfect holiday.

Mr Cox

Big comfortable house with lots of space inside and out, our dog loved being able to roam around the grounds freely. Granddaughter loved the big scarey swing. The house is well equipped with everything you need. Great location but car required to get around.

Mrs Apsey

Everything about the cottage was excellent. The whole family enjoyed it, we age range between 24 - 83. Don't want to tell anyone about it as it will make it harder to book again, (that's my selfish side coming out) haha. Serious side, 100% recommend it.

Mrs Hoare

An absolutely wonderful cottage. Especially perfect for families with children. The house is beautiful and the gardens are magical. We all had a very happy week despite a lot of terrible weather!!

Mrs Lewis

Gorgeous cottage and beautiful grounds. Perfect for young children and dogs.

Mrs Northern

Loved this place, children didn't want to leave!!

Mrs Long

The month of May in this woodland garden was a pure joy . The flowers and wildlife made us so happy ,we absolutely loved every walk around.

Mrs Forde

Golden Cock Cottage exceeded our expectations, we adored the house but the garden is inadequately titled. This is not a garden; it's a park, and it has something for the whole family. We had our 15 year old girls with us plus one of their friends and despite their teenage years the girls were like young girls,, children again, running through the garden, hide and seek, playing on the swings, finding the hidden den. The garden has a map framed, hanging on the kitchen wall, great fun. We had a wonderfully memorable week’s holiday here, our biggest mistake; we should have booked another week!

Mrs Patton

A Lovely house off the beaten track but within easy access to ST Ives and surrounding area. The property has lots of amenities and was enjoyed by a party of all ages. The children and dog thoroughly enjoyed racing round the large garden and woods. Don't want to recommend this property as we want to keep it all for ourselves ! Millie x

Mr Vowles

Golden Cock Cottage is a wonderful place for three generations to spend quality time together. The woodlands are quite unique.

Mrs Gumbrill

An ideal place for family, kids and dogs to stay, highly recommended.

Mr Kloecker

Fabulous place. Very helpful description how to use the facility. The nicest hosts! After many years of very good rental vacations, this was the best rental experience .

Mrs Evans

It's a magical place for all ages. Love this cottage been 3 years on the run and hope to back again, never want to go home.

Mrs O'Sullivan

The house is in a wonderful location, a hidden gem. fantastic beaches nearby, great walks with the dog.

Mr Jones

We like the grounds, perfect if you have a dog. It is in a good location for visiting attractions and is big enough for a large family get-together.
