Old Forge Cottage
This charming retreat makes for the perfect adventurer’s bolthole. Whether seeking out new and exciting destinations by car, or exploring this idyllic area on foot, this property is ideally located; however I’m sure your four-legged friends will opt for nature and countryside walks!
Nestled in the grounds of an old water mill (which is the owners’ residence), this delightful cottage offers a very warm welcome. With a private patio-area and two glowing wood-burners this charming cottage is the perfect retreat, especially as it’s nestled on the edge of Dartmoor National Park which is a must-do day out.
Exploring the local towns and cities is exceptionally easy as you are only five minutes from the A38. A day out at the beach is also a fabulous option, as within a car drive you have a fantastic selection of south Devon’s sandy beaches at your disposal.
However, you could just spend your holiday relaxing and unwinding in this beautiful area.

Mrs Tudman
Rob and Barbara were very helpful and their waterwheel and power generation very impressive. Interesting walks can be found straight from the door, and we enjoyed walks locally and further afield, as well as visiting the coast. We ate out at the Old Ship at Ugborough, a short drive away, and the food was delicious. The ev charger was very handy.
Mrs Hemming
The Old Forge is a very unique cottage, with wonderful quirky features, like the superb curved wall in the kitchen and the hidden built in fridge etc. It is set in the most beautiful gardens and countryside, with wonderful walks from the door and Dartmoor close by.
Mrs. Martin
We found the cottage to be very well equipped. Comfortable beds and very good bathrooms. Really friendly and helpful owners. The home made cake was much appreciated.
Mrs Jackson
Very comfortable, pretty cottage, which has been painstakingly restored by the owners. Based in a good location for exploring South Hams and Dartmoor, and near a pretty part of the river Avon, close to Lydia Bridge within an easy short riverside walk to South Brent. Out hosts were very friendly and helpful, and we appreciated our lovely cake on our arrival.
Mr Biggs
Great position for exploring both South Dartmoor and the coast. Interestingly quirky and very comfortable.
Miss Hulcoop
Highly recommend, such a wonderful place and property. We had such a great stay, which despite being two weeks long our hosts were very accommodating/thoughtful throughout. Lots of lovely touches; the lemon drizzle cake on arrival being one. Enjoyed learning about the history of the property and the local area. Lovely place to stay and will definitely be coming back to stay again. Thank you.
Mrs Steele
We had a lovely week in Old Forge Cottage. The cottage is in a lovely, quiet location. The eggs and cake on arrival were lovely touches and we enjoyed them! We explored Devon and Cornwall and the cottage was in a good spot for both.
Mrs Drewett
We had the most wonderful week at this property. If you are after total relaxation in an idyllic spot by a working water wheel and within a stones throw of a beautiful river and walks in all directions then this is the property for you. The property is very spacious and everything and more you could need has been provided. Two outdoor spaces at front and back so you can maximise the sunshine from morning to evening. A very cosy living room with comfy sofas and a woodburner. Ideally placed for adventures of all kinds, yet many walks from the door and a village with good village shop etc only a 10 minute walk along the river. The property is so full of character, it was like staying in a modernised, well maintained National Trust property with garden views to match! I highly recommend this property and it was thoroughly enjoyed by our family of three plus our cockerpoo who thought she was in heaven with daily river swims, long walks and trips to Dartmoor/ Plymouth in easy reach. A little slice of heaven in Devon!
Mrs Fletcher
A beautiful setting and great location giving access to moors and coast. We kept to the beaches on the western side, Bantham, Bigbury, Mothecombe and Wembury to avoid the bigger crowds and traffic. Lovely to walk to village along river, only 10-15 minutes. Locals do swim in the calm side of the river away from the rapids. Village store and deli, pub okay and the Station House Cafe/bar/ restaurant perfect. Plenty of walks for those who don't want to use a car , peaceful setting for lazing, but easy to access the A38 for days out. Upstairs beds comfortable, downstairs probably more suitable for children. 11 year old loved the mezzanine configuration. Having three bathrooms was wonderful for our group!
Mrs Corry
Old Forge Cottage is in a great location, close to Dartmoor for walking and has a lovely garden. A sweet place to stay.
Mrs Blonk-Hermans
Lovely cottage, very spacious and clean, in beautiful surroundings. 2 possibilities to sit outside. Dartmoor on your doorstep. Very nice owners: always helpful, a home-baked cake and a basket with fresh eggs from their own chickens, homemade jam and crackers at arrival. Free to move in their garden. The best cottage we've ever been to, highly recommended.
Mrs Negus
Our stay in Old Forge Cottage was a very pleasant experience, the owners are very friendly and extremely helpful and we found nice little touches such as eggs from their hens, homemade jam and flapjacks in the kitchen on arrival as well as a pint of milk. The cottage is in an ideal spot to explore south Devon but if visitors just want to just relax and walk without having to drive or cook, there are very limited places to eat. Although there was a great Co-op in the village which is open until 11pm each day and a very nice tea shop, the pub was very poor and the range of food on offer there was extremely limited. The fish and chip shop was also never open which gave us little choice if we wanted to eat out in the evenings.
Mr CHABAUD
Classic Cottages website is an ideal way to access the accommodation that suits you. You've got all the informations you need (before but also during your stay) and you fell supported in case of problem.
Mrs Nelson
Excellent location, lovely walks along the river and local area. Friendly helpful owners nearby. Plenty of space and comfort within the property. We had a lovely stay.
Mrs Milner
We absolutely loved this cottage and the location. A perfect size, with plenty of space for a family of four with two teenagers. The owners were warm & thoughtful, with a lovely welcome (the cake was amazing). The games room was a brilliant and different way to end an evening. And the cottage location was perfect to access the moor and the coast. We couldn't have asked for a more relaxing week away.
Mrs Claisse
Such a lovely little cottage in an idyllic setting! Once you get used to the bridges and roads it's perfect! The hosts were amazing, so friendly and helpful! The cottage has everything you need and was so clean and welcoming, even a cake when we arrived!!
Mr Best
Wonderful stay we all really enjoyed the short break and wish it could have been longer, we all enjoyed the Lemon spice cake ! Beautiful setting and beautiful cottage really well renovated loved the book showing what it was like before ,so much hard work ! So a huge thank you for a really enjoyable stay .
Mrs North
Fab.
Mrs McKay
Beautiful cottage, with luxurious bedrooms and bathrooms, well equipped kitchen/diner and cosy lounge, in an idyllic position, near a waterfall. Off road parking for our two cars. Country walks straight from the door, with the moor nearby. A wonderful short walk along the river to the village, which has really good amenities. Home made cake and tea/coffee milk provided. I would highly recommend this cottage.
Mr Morris
In addition to the property being excellent in every way, the owners Barbara and Rob were very friendly and helpful. I would seriously recommend this accommodation without any reservations for a comfortable and peaceful holiday in the heart of Devon.
Mr Hocking
We loved our time at The Old Forge. The owners, Rob and Barbara were most friendly and welcoming, and the accommodation was of a very high standard. The cottage was very clean and comfortable, and we welcomed the log burner on the colder nights. The area around the cottage is very picturesque, and very quiet apart from the sound of running water from the river, which we all loved. This is an ideal base for visiting South Devon, with many beaches within easy reach. Dartmoor is just on the doorstep and there are many beautiful walks nearby. We also visited the Eden Project (around 1 hour 15 minutes away), Buckfast Abbey, Torquay, Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe. Would highly recommend The Old Forge.
Mrs Rome
Despite the inclement May weather we still managed to have a lovely time at the cottage. Friendly owners who live next door and home made cake to greet us. Great walks from the cottage with Dartmoor literally just up the road. There are local shops in South Brent and they are walkable from the cottage via a good track by the river. Cottage cosy and we made good use of the log fire in the lounge in the evenings. Thanks for our first post lockdown holiday!
Miss Smith
We had the best stay at the Old Forge Cottage. On arrival Rob and Barbara were so welcoming and inside the cottage was a beautiful book explaining their story of purchasing and refurbishing the cottages. The area was lovely and quiet with mostly just the sounds of birdsong, as well as a few walkers passing by. But we never felt too isolated as the village was just a short walk away - you cross a gorgeous little bridge before arriving to the cottage and there is a lovely public footpath there you can follow into the village (where there is a fab fish and chip shop!) There was more than enough space in the cottage for just the two of us. The window seat in the lounge as well as the two outdoor spaces because our favourite places during our stay - all great spots for catching the sun. The cottage was very well equipped and having a dishwasher made life a lot easier. We found the log burner really easy to use and used it on many evenings for that extra bit of cosiness. The location was great too. Just half an hour from Haytor where we watched the sunset on our first evening - absolutely magical. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay. We are already planning on coming back to stay again with friends/family!
Mrs Powell
We absolutely loved our stay!! Great contact with owners, quick to reply to texts but leave you to enjoy your stay in peace. Tea and cake left on arrival was a bonus! Fantastic location for walks, few public footpaths right outside so perfect for our dog! We stayed as 5 adults, a one year old and a dog and felt we had plenty of space, especially with 3 bathrooms. Games room was brilliant! Darts and table football kept us all entertained when the classic British summer weather hit! The 2 main bedrooms were brilliant, the single bed downstairs is quite claustrophobic as only fits a single mattress up a steep ladder, however it wasn't a problem for us as we dragged the mattress down and slept comfortably but may be an issue for some if coming as a bigger group like us. Owners were very nice about it all when we had a chat with them. Kitchen had absolutely everything you could think of to cook meals there. Cot, highchair and stair gates provided if needed which were great for us. Good location, friendly owners, very clean and comfortable. We had a great week celebrating a 40th and we plan on staying again!
Mrs Evdoka-Burton
We had a great stay, lovely cottage and beautiful location. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to a friend or possibly stay again in the future.
Mrs Edwards
Great location to explore Dartmoor.
Mrs Smith
This is a lovely property in a good location, close to Moors and the sea. Plenty to do in both directions. But it is not suitable for small children especially adventurous toddlers.
Mrs Wedlake
Old fashioned and slightly shabby in places but clean and comfy. Great to have 2 woodburners and 3 bathrooms. Very friendly owners but quite close proximity to next door neighbours. Good touring base for Devon and Cornwall.
Mr Wolton
Beautiful cottage in a stunning location easily accessible to many beautiful places of interest on Dartmoor and the coast. Very spacious for 4 people and all the amenities and things you need for a nice stay, comfortable are there. The place is very cosy with two log burners. Rob and Barbara are lovely - thanks for the cake and tea/milk on arrival, for the logs, use of the games room and for loaning us their crabbing kit - all of which went down well with our 7 year old!
Mr Craig
Amazing cottage in a beautiful location. The owners are so lovely, friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone and will be booking again .
Mrs Hutchinson
A tasteful, quirky and spacious home for five in an idyllic spot with all mod cons including dishwasher and coffeemaker. The wood burners were fantastic during our wet and windy stay
Ms Brown
The welcome pack of milk and homemade cake was very much appreciated, we were able to buy other essentials - bread, butter, tea, coffee etc locally when we arrived. For a winter holiday you need to be prepared to use the wood burners especially in the kitchen as it is quite cold without them. We were pleasantly surprised at how big and comfortable the cottage was and enjoyed the luxury of underfloor heating in the bathroom.
Mrs Vaughan
This was our first cottage we have had with our young dog and, never quite knowing what to expect from a ‘doggie cottage’ it was brilliant. Immaculately clean, really well equipped and a great location for us to meet our Ivybridge based friends. The wood burners were a real feature and kept us toasty warm on a really cold (weather wise) weekend!
Mrs Turnbull
My family and dog stayed at Old Forge for a very wet week at the end of November. Absolutely loved the cottage, a very cosy retreat with two long burners. The location was perfect with Plymouth and Dartmoor both easy to drive to. Nice dog walks along the river into the village, owners were really friendly and welcoming. Really did not want to leave!
Miss Morris
Lovely welcome by owners, they left us to enjoy our holiday, cottage was beautiful, village only a short walk along the river, we had a wonderful holiday
Mrs Aplin
Cottage was very clean well equipped and comfortable owners were helpful informative and friendly. The village had enough shops to supply our needs . Would recommend a holiday here.
Ms Webb
Lovely and peaceful location. Next to a river with outdoor seating to appreciate the surroundings with a glass of wine or cup of tea. Walking distance to the village pub and shops. Central location for exploring Dartmoor and Devon’s coastline. Owners were lovely and had a homemade delicious cake waiting for us on arrival.
Miss Christmas
The cottage is lovely and feels very opulent. It is situated in a lovely quiet area next to the river. We had a lovely week exploring the surrounding area and towns. South Brent village is in walking distance and has a couple of good convenience stores, including the village store, which even had home made gluten free products.
Mrs Rowlinson
Lovely cottage with easy access to Dartmoor, the coast, Exeter and Plymouth. Very welcoming and helpful owners.
Mrs Jenkins
Beautiful cottage. Yummy cake on arrival! Lovely walk for fish and chips along the stream. Great beaches nearby.
